Review on BanG Dream! YUME∞MITA

(No spoiler. Please feel free to continue)

The story writers in Bushiroad seemed to be following a cliche formula as they’ve concluded from their previous anime production, like BanG Dream! It’s MyGO!!!!! and BanG Dream! Ave Mujica. The hackneyed story guideline can be summarized into 5 steps:

  1. Founding a band with bright prospect
  2. Member conflicts appear, where the conflict is sometime (always) stupid
  3. One or some of band members left, making the band broken up
  4. Vocal: Oh! I want to be Kirakira Dokidoki! Let’s make up and shine on stage!
  5. Problem solved inexplicably. Everyone must be happy in the band once again so that Bushiroad can earn JPYs from its Otaku fans

I mean: does the audience enjoy such story? Yes, but on the premise of the character rationality and plot consistency. Unfortunately, the answer in BanG Dream! YUME∞MITA is NO. Reason for disband is ridiculous, and character behaviours is childish

As a contrast, the story of MyGO is unparalleled and remarkable, actually it’s one of my favourite stories that I’ve watched, not just in the scope of anime, but any type of story:

  • Motives are clear
  • Each character is behaving reasonably as the story developed
  • Loads of foreshadowing in all the phases of the story
  • Details that one might not even notice unless carefully reviewed

Enough for the plot, here’s another point of view: how can a regular band have no bass and drum player while having a DJ?

It’s bizarre to hear drum and bass in their live as the five member (two guitar, one vocal, one keyboard and one DJ) performing on stage. Fine… nobody cares about the rhythm section, as pop music is “popular” in the literal sense in 21 century, and I suppose a DJ and a sole-vocal is much more “popular” than drum and bass. I suppose I should ignore the musical expediency in a commercialized band anime, whose main target audience might not care much about what’s going on in the musical part.

Having said that, 3D modeling, performance effect and voice acting is still great.

Anyway, I hope there’ll be more such kind of story in the future.
